How to Design a High-Converting Digital Menu
Designing a digital menu is not simply copying your paper PDF onto a screen. A smartphone screen is small, dynamic, and highly interactive. To make your digital QR menu successful, you must apply user experience (UX) layout standards designed to guide your guests' eyes and simplify decisions.
1. Clean Category Navigation Tabs
Diners shouldn't scroll endlessly to find a beverage or a dessert. Implement sticky horizontal category tabs (e.g. Antipasti, Pasta, Mains, Dessert, Drinks) at the top of the viewport. This allows users to jump to their desired section instantly with a single tap.
2. The Gold Standard of Food Descriptions
Your item descriptions should create anticipation. Instead of just listing ingredients, use rich adjectives:
- Don't write: "Burrata cheese, ham, arugula."
- Instead write: "Creamy Puglia burrata served with 24-month aged Prosciutto di Parma, wild baby arugula, and rich balsamic reduction glaze."
3. Categorize with Visual Tags
Allergen and dietary identification should be immediate. Incorporate small colored tags like green for 🌱 Vegan, yellow for 🌾 Gluten-Free, and red for 🌶️ Spicy. This builds trust with patrons who have dietary restrictions, prompting them to order without double-checking with servers.
4. Optimize Color Contrast
Ensure that text is highly readable, especially in dimly lit restaurants. A dark theme with high contrast orange or amber highlights (like AztecMenu's primary HSL palette) provides a luxurious, comfortable visual experience under low-light dining situations.
